Practitioner Support Resources

We are currently developing a list of websites, documents, and other resources to help members improve their citizen engagement practices.  Come back in early April to see the great reference guides we have found--and which will be continually refreshed.  Below are two great reference guides full of helpful and practical information on how to do civic engagement for maximum impact.

New Laboratories of Democracy:  How Local Government Is Reinventing Civic Engagement.  This document is one of the best summaries of the national movement toward "deliberative democracy" in local government.  The article provides a quick foundation in civic engagement methodology and theory before going on to describe numerous practical and diverse ways governments are currently benefiting from citizen engagement projects and structures.

Engaging Citizens:  Meeting the Challenges of Community Life.   This booklet describes the model of community deliberation used by the National Issues Forum--name the problem, frame the options, deliberate in small groups.  Some of the practical solutions they provide include learning how...
  • To Move a Community beyond First Reactions and Popular Opinion
  • To Work Through Moral Disagreements
  • To Set the Stage for Community Problem Solving
  • To Make Progress When Consensus Is Impossible
  • To Inform Officeholders
